Coaching, Consultation, and Performance Improvement
Opportunities to develop consultative relationships abound on a college campus as well as in the community. By working with individuals in numerous capacities and developing rapport, mutual referral becomes much easier. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of professionals and faculty members who send students my way and that I send to them - both ways give the student security in being referred to a particular individual rather than a department as a whole.
Because of my presentations with the Human Resources Training Program for "Using Your MBTI Type for Leadership Development", I have had faculty and staff enroll and participate in the workshop. They can see the application of type in career planning and are more likely to encourage students to visit the Career Center. They also often ask for MBTI Training for their office and see the Career Center as housing professional consultants.
Coaching skills have been developed by working with student employees and interns. Often we have the opportunity to educate them in job search skills as well as an appreciation of career counseling. Working closely with the practicum/intern students, I have the responsibility of evaluating their performance and discussing ways for improvement. I have also mentored them beyond graduation serving both as a reference and as a mentor - since many of them continue working in career services.
