In order to keep up with today's employment trends, it is essential for me to stay abreast in a variety of ways:
- By reading available resources online such as Linked-in, Chronicle of Higher Education, and news resources.
- Another resource is from students in my classes from their assignment to share with the class articles they've found online on "the world of work today."
- The career counselors in the Career Center attend NCDA conferences and attend sessions on the trends in hiring.
- Participate in webinars such as "Recruiting Trends 2013".
- Regular use of the Occupational Outlook Handbook when working with students provide an opportunity to learn about a variety of occupations.
- Development of community contacts as a resource for students in learning more about a particular career direction and networking.
Resources available to students to learn more about career fields and specific occupations:
- Career Center's Resource Library (Note: as the person responsible for purchasing relevant and useful resources, I regularly check career resource catalogs and visit NCDA's Exhibit Hall for new resources)
- On the Career Center's website, students can use resources such as "What Can I Do With a Major in...?" to learn about the areas of work and employers that hire they major as well as strategies to be successful when entering the field.
- Listings of web resources include job search skills, job listings, internship links, etc.as well as links to the Occupational Outlook Handbook and O'NET.
- Tiger Recruiting Link is a database for employers to list job openings and for students to use to find job opportunities for part-time, internships, and full-time positions.
- Link to register to participate in the center's shadowing program to learn more about a particular occupation.
- Software includes FOCUS, a program that allows students to take a variety of assessments, it compiles the results and shows students a listing of occupations that they might enjoy, the majors related to the occupations, and schools that offer these majors. They can also select an occupation to get an overview of the job including training requirements, salary, etc. Another software program, CareerBeam, offers much of the same features as FOCUS but also gives more information on the culture of certain career fields, job listings, and information on how to write a resume, cover letter, etc.
- CareerShift is a software program that is a 24/7 search engine for job listings allowing students (and alumni) to search for jobs by key words as well as geographic preference or by business. Students can find AU contacts for the jobs that are of interest for immediate networking information.
- Going Global allows international students to learn more about obtaining work permits and job opportunities in major cities across the U.S. American students can select countries of interest to learn about their culture, work permits, economic issues, and job listings.
